The Knights of Lithuania C-144 celebrated Lithuanian Independence Day and hosted and Amber District meeting on March 11, 2012 at the Annunciation Church BVM Frackville, PA. Sixty members from the Amber District attended.
Members from Council 144 received their "Third Degree" certificates and medals. Members included: Elaine Luschas, Carol Luschas, Elizabeth Frye, James Hess, Peg Hess, Antoinette Pancerella, Anthony Richtus, Dot Setcavage, James Setcavage, Meredith Domalakes and Margaret Valinsky. Congratulations! Annie Domalakes presented a lecture about the Grand Duke Vytautas. She studied his historical and social importance throughout the ages. There were various exhibits and displays including handmade marguciai eggs by Christine Luschas, March 11 1990 Independence, calendar of events, and an exhibit about Lithuanians in sports. Tables were decorated green and red table clothes accented with gold chargers. Every table had a tricolored Lithuanian flag table runner, and lovely floral centerpieces. For starters various fruits and vegetable trays were served. The main meal included Chicken Francese, Beef Burgundy, mashed potatoes, and salad. Dessert included a fabulous iced vanilla cake with the VYTIS emblem and homemade Lithuanian Nut Roll. A documentary entitled "The Other Dream Team" is scheduled to be released in 2012. It is a moving and stimulating film that focuses on the 1992 Lithuanian National Basketball Team. Lithuania a newly independent country of only 3 million astonished the world winning the bronze medal in Barcelona. The documentary chronicles the story behind the Lithuanian National Basketball Team through oppression during the soviet era and the distinctive partnership with the Grateful Dead in 1992 in Barcelona. The film was directed/produced by Marius Markevicius. He is a MFA graduate of UCLA's School of Theater Film & and Television Producer's Program. More information about the documentary can be found at: www.theotherdreamteam.com Kaunas, the second largest city in Lithuania, was selected by the Lithuanian people as having the prettiest Christmas tree. Nick named the "emerald," the tree was constructed by: Jolanta Šmidtienė out of 50,000 green bottles. The tree has received lots of international media attention and may be placed in the Guinness World Records!
A traditional Lithuanian Christmas tree is on display at the Girardville Historical Society in northeastern PA. The tree was designed and decorated by K of L C-144 members Elaine Luschas and Carol Luschas. Handmade ornaments in various geometric shapes and sizes adorned the tree.
Center court of the Schuykill Mall was bursting with life this Saturday, August 13 and Sunday August 14. Lithuanian Americans from across the state and around the nation came together to celebrate Lithuanian Days which is the LONGEST running ethnic festival in the USA! There was plenty of traditional Lithuanian food, folk dancers from Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Mahanoy City, singers, and vendors selling Lithuanian treasures.
Lithuanian Days also featured a Heritage Room with exhibits about Lithuanians in Sports and Folk Art. A Genealogy expert was also on hand to answer questions about researching family history and a puppeteer who preformed the Little Mermaid. Thank you to all who celebrated, participated and helped with Lithuanian Days! It was a great success! ACIU LABAI from the Knights of Lithuania C-144! Thank you! Carol A. Luschas Webmaster Knights of Lithuania C-144 On Friday, June 3, 2011 the Sisters of Saint Casimir of Chicago visited the Mother Pauline Visitainer Center in Kulpmont, PA. Sister Immacula Wendt, Sister Margaret Petcavage, Sister Therese Banach and Sister Laurdine Ramoska met with former parishioners of Holy Cross Church. Brigadier General Frank Sullivan of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, presented a plaque and flag to the sisters, to honor their support to spread Mother Maria's story. Many articles were on display including an 18 inch cross and two candles originally used in the Holy Cross Church.
The Lithuanian Citizens' Society of Western, PA created and promoted a fabulous educational exhibit at the 54th Annual Pittsburgh Folk Festival in Monroeville, PA. The theme was "amber" and told the legend of "Jurate and Kastytis."
Christine Luschas, a member of the Knights of Lithuania #144 demonstrated how to make traditional "marguciai" eggs. The Lithuanian dance group "Neris" named after the Neris River in Lithuania, preformed on Friday, May 13th. The group has been in existence since 1965 and is lead by the talented Connie Miskyte-Zatek. For more information about the Lithuanian Citizens' Society go to http://www.pittsburghlithuanians.com. The Knights of Lithuania Council #144 hosted the Amber District meeting on April 10, 2011 at the Annunciation Hall in Frackville, PA. 46 members from five councils were represented. Elaine Luschas provided a lovely display on Lithuanian Easter Eggs and traditions. She also donated nine eggs to be given as prizes.
The Cultural Chair discussed the issue of two nuclear power plants that will to be built near the Lithuanian boarder in neighboring Belarus (30 miles from Vilnius) and in Russia along the Kaliningrad enclave which also boarders Lithuania. The construction will be carried out by the Russian government which does not follow the same quality of standards for nuclear power as Western European countries. We are asking all Knights of Lithuania members to write his/her representative and senator to express concern. Thank you to all Knights of Lithuania #144 members who helped set-up and host the Amber District Meeting. It was was a beautiful, well attended and educational event! |
